TOP 10 foods to avoid stocking your fridge with

1.     Lunch meat – Lunch/deli meats (like ham and cured turkey) might seem like wonderful convenience foods to have stocked in your fridge but you might want to think again because the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified processed meat as a Level 1 carcinogen (cancer causing). That’s the same cancer-causing classification as tobacco use in that it definitively causes cancer in humans. In addition to being cancer causing, these products also offer up a truck load of other disease-causing properties associated with chronic disease and obesity.

2.     Soda – Drinks such as soda pop, fruit drinks, and energy drinks are laced with sugar and other harmful ingredients and they are being sold everywhere. All the extra empty calories and sugar are associated with increased risked of Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and bone density issues. Instead, opt for water or tea.

3.     Frozen French fries – These are also foods that people often reach for due to convenience but these foods are also often loaded with saturated and trans fats due to pre-frying before freezing. Instead, opt for a baked potato or roasted potatoes to reap the health benefits of potatoes! In fact, did you know that the humble potato has more potassium than a banana?

4.     Red Meat – This includes beef, pork, veal, lamb, and goat. Red meat products may seem like a healthy source of protein but they have in fact been labeled as Group 2A carcinogens by the IARC. That means there is strong evidence supporting its cancer-causing effects.  Like processed meats, they are also heavily associated with other chronic disease such as Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

5.     Skippy Peanut Butter – Okay so this may or may not be in your fridge but many peanut butters on the store shelves are processed and filled with not only sugar, but hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oil (and partially hydrogenated oil) is filled with trans fat and is a leading cause of heart disease and are not Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA! Instead go for healthy peanut butter that only has one ingredient – Peanuts (and sometimes a little salt), like Adams.

6.     Milk and Dairy Products – Milk and other dairy products like cheese, butter, and yogurt have been marketed as being healthy and high in calcium. However, these claims are in fact opposite from what science reports. Dairy is strongly linked to Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, and poor bone health. Instead, opt for other sources high in calcium and minerals such as beans, greens, and seeds!

7.     Hot Dogs, Sausages, & Bacon – Even though these are also convenient foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, these products fall under the same processed/cured meats by the IARC as Level 1 carcinogens. If you really like the convenience of these foods, opt for Smart Dogs or Field Roast Sausages instead. Better yet, go for grilled mushrooms or tofu!

8.     Ice Cream – This one might seem like a no brainer, but when it comes to desserts, ice cream is filled with sugar, saturated fat and excess calories. Not to mentioned the negative health effects of dairy as outlined above. Instead, try fruit sorbet or popsicles for dessert, or better yet, fresh fruit!

9.     Margarine – Many margarines sold in stores contain hydrogenated oil and thus unsafe amounts of trans fat. As indicated above, this should be avoided at all costs.  Margarines also contain large amounts of saturated fat as well. Instead try Earth Balance butter which contains zero trans fat, lower saturated fats, and higher healthy fats like Omega-3s.

10.   Frozen Pizza – These convenience foods can be loaded with heart disease causing saturated and trans fats in addition to refined carbohydrates. Frozen pizzas are gut bombs waiting to explode in your stomach!
